In fourth position during lap two, Simoncelli's bike lost traction in Turn 11 and it started to slide towards the gravel, but the tires regained traction and his bike suddenly veered across the track into the path of Edwards and Rossi, with Simoncelli hanging down on the right side. The race was immediately red-flagged.
Edwards suffered a dislocated shoulder. Simoncelli suffered much more severe injuries and was taken by ambulance to the circuit's medical centre. The family were greeted by Italian Olympic Committee president Giovanni Petrucci, before the body was transported to a theatre in CorianoRimini, where it was placed in an open coffin. Fans and visitors were then allowed to pay their respects, in a walk-through memorial that included his cc World Championship winning Gilera, plus his MotoGP Honda.
At the Malaysian Grand PrixFerrari drivers Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonsoalong with other members of the team paid tribute to Simoncelli by returning to turn 11 and having a group photo with a banner in remembrance.
The team is created to help young Italian riders to pursue their dream of becoming world champions. The Supermoto Day was subsequently cancelled. The ceremony took place at the Italian round in Mugello.

On 8 Septemberit was announced that Simoncelli's racing number 58 would be retired from all classes of Grand Prix racing competition. However, he fell heavily during free practice and suffered a severe gash to the knee, which practically rendered him immobile.
Pedrosa qualified 5th on the grid in that race after heavy rain cancelled the qualifying session. He managed to finish 3rd in the race, behind Rossi and Ducati rider Loris Capirossi. However, in the next races, his form dropped and he struggled with the bike, moving him down to 5th place in the MotoGP standings.
His poor performance continued at Estoril. After a promising start, he briefly ran 2nd before being passed by Colin Edwards and then championship leader and teammate Hayden. On lap 5, he and Hayden were involved in a crash. Pedrosa made a mistake whilst trying to overtake Hayden, slid and crashed out of the race, taking out Hayden on the way. This crash ended his slim chances of winning the championship and also caused Hayden to lose his lead in the championship standings, as Rossi managed to finish 2nd.
However, two weeks later, Hayden recovered to win the championship while Pedrosa managed to finish in 4th place. This result clinched his 5th place in overall standings in his debut season, thus taking the title as Rookie of the Year, beating former cc rival Casey Stoner. At the end of season three-day test of at Jerez, Pedrosa put his cc RCV at the top of the timesheets on qualifying tyres edging out Rossi, who had been fastest on the first two days, by 0.
The machine had problems,  and Pedrosa was taken out of races by Olivier Jacque and by Randy de Punietbut he finished the season in second place behind Stoner and ahead of Rossi.
He signed a 2-year contract with Repsol Honda for and The incident was reviewed by Race Direction after the race, where Rossi was given three penalty points — enough to enforce a start from the back of the grid for the final race in Valencia. After these four good results, he slowed down with a fifth position at the Red Bull Ring in Austriafollowed by a third position in Brno and two fourth positions at Silverstone and Misano.
He said he thought it suits his riding style better  and proved it by winning the race. The 3 last races had been at Australia, Malaysia and Valencia.
At the Australian Grand Prix he crashed out of the race while leading,  he then crashed while chasing the leading trio at the Malaysian Grand Prix in tricky wet conditions but remounted the bike and finished in 11th position adding 5 more points to his points tally. He took his first win of the year in Texas, followed by 2nd place behind teammate Pedrosa at Jerez.
He then suffered a second crash of the season in France, followed by a disappointing 6th-place finish at Mugello, struggling in both races with the Honda's lack of acceleration off the corners. He finished second in Catalunya, despite suffering several crashes through practice and qualifying.
He then recorded another podium finish in the Netherlands, beating Andrea Dovizioso and Cal Crutchlow in a close battle at the end of the race. However, from then onwards fortunes started to swing in Marquez's favor, taking his eighth consecutive victory at the Sachsenring in Germany, at the same time taking the lead of the championship.
He then scored back-to-back victories in the Czech Republic, after outfoxing his rivals by pitting early for slick tires on a drying track.
A week later in Austria he narrowly lost out to Dovizioso in a thrilling race.
