pornography and the effects on a relationship

Pornography and its impact on adult sexual relationships is controversial. Pornography is any form of media created to arouse the user sexually. Men who regularly watch pornography are more likely to depend on it to stay aroused but are less likely to enjoy sex with a real-life partner. Of course, people with partners view pornography, too, leaving many of us wondering whether pornography use among couples affects relationship quality.

In other words, when a relationship is going poorly, people might turn to porn.

How Pornography Distorts Intimate Relationships

But turning to porn can now make the relationship go even worse. And you have a vicious cycle.

Did researchers look into what happens when couples who have used pornography within the context of their relationship stopped doing that? So the study actually allows you to do that because it's measuring the same couples over time.

And what it finds is that men and women seem to fare differently. This was a surprising part of the study. Women who stop using porn seem to have happier relationships.

But we don't know exactly why. Stopping porn use didn't seem to make much of a difference for the men in the study. Are there any big implications to be drawn from this research?

Well, Perry, thinks that we would do very well to think carefully about the effects that porn has on our romantic relationships. Two of the sad things that he finds is that younger couples and happier couples seem to be more affected by porn use than older couples and less happy couples. The study also can distinguish between people who use porn occasionally and those who use it regularly. It's possible the effects are actually much larger for people for whom pornography is a daily part of their lives.

Is pornography that prevalent with men? And what should I do with these feelings? This is a very important question and one that many couples struggle with. First, it is correct in saying that many men turn to pornography on a regular basis.

It is estimated that 40 million Americans regularly visit porn sites on the internet. About one-third of those regular visitors are women. It is a very big deal because of how it erodes the physical and emotional intimacy in real relationships. Here are some things to consider: Healthy relationships are built on trust.

He is the author of Wired For Intimacy: How Pornography Hijacks the Male Brain. According to Dr Struthers, norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine all play a part in male sexual arousal, along with the male hormone, testosterone. Testosterone is a gonadal hormone produced in the testis involved in many processes in the body. One of them is the male sexual drive. Men experience this as an intense and growing desire for sexual release. This wave of testosterone will occur if a man is thinking about or interacting with his wife, but it also happens when a man is staring at other women or a pornographic image.

This all sounds very logical and understandable but when clients come into my office at the point of breakup over porn addiction, me explaining this only goes so far.

Try explaining this to a woman who has just found her partner masturbating over very explicit images of naked women. Women state, "It's like porn is his mistress", " I feel like he is having an affair with porn", "I feel betrayed". This is because it affects women in their emotions, the core of their being, and wounds them so deeply.
