It tells the Cinderella-like story desore an orphaned young woman, Elysia, raised in aristocracy but reduced to rags by an evil, jealous aunt. I fear it might come from the book being published in the 70s.
Alex and Elysia are wonderful, but the drama and angst and misunderstands due to lack of communication had me wanting yo tear my hair out! Blackmore, was out to kill Elysia and tried to twice. I wanted the characters to move somewhere, sail desife sea or get thrown into another locale. She starts off too close to feistiness and petulance, but in some of her later dialogue with Alex, she challenges him laurif more intelligent fashion, and I found their dialogue and the chemistry between the two reminiscent of an old movie.
He wants her, he plays games with her to get her to succumb to his will, he is jealous, and ok I can’t seem to have anything nice to say about him. She also suffers a bit from too much ‘tell’ and not enough ‘show’.
The hero, Alex, is arrogant, seductive, a rake, considered the Devil himself, lucky at everything he does and about to meet his true love. The marriage happened too early on in the story, about a third of the way. Last Chance, My Love. A Taste of Desire. Final thoughts and recommendation: There was not much dialogue in this book and would have like more, but the story was good.
It will solve a bunch of nonsensical plot issues. I really, really hated AitW for many reasons, but paramount was the OTT mwahahaha-ness of that climax with the smugglers’ cave and the villainess being revealed.
