Fab stuff indeed, and followed by the very satisfying sequel “The Day After Judgement”. Jamrs, for some odd reason, there are no female characters to speak of in either novel. I’ve not read Blish before and I really liked his erudite prose.

This is a thesis novel in the sense that its events seem to have been carefully thought out before Blish even began to write the book – from the first page to bliish last, he leads the reader towards a powerful and inevitable conclusion. It’s possible because Blish offers us the theological science that called magic, which, in its ancient forms you pick the “-emy” or “-mancy” was the root of all secular sciences. Finallyand a mild criticismwhile it is delightful that Blish takes care to present Malefica as a discipline, it is or was, for when I first read this I was merely thirteen somewhat disenchanting to see that Blish gets most of the Satanic formulae, Latin incantations, and demon summoning paraphernalia hopelessly wrong.

A tale of a Sorcerer who uses the black arts to enact crimes of violence against targets of his client’s revenge, it uses text blaxk actual medieval grimoires such as the ‘Clavicula Salmonis’ and ‘The Goetia’ Lesser Key of Salomon for the ritual magick scenes.

I found that dated the second book and made it less interesting, although jamess did have moments of very black comedy. The plot of this novel could be charted with a single ascending line.
