This certainly isn’t dull Catholic liturgy In Portugal’s de facto ‘national poem’ Camoes celebrates the Lusiads – the Portuguese – and their golden era of exploration and discovery. Really, really interesting in terms of scientific advances, colonialism, expanding knowledge of geography and cultures in the 16th century, cultural blending or notand mixing of epic tradition with history.
This edition of the Lusiads is truly a wonderful volume, with an introduction and commentary that attest to White’s diligent scholarship. At the very least, Canto Nine should be mandatory reading, particularly Leonard’s lament, which I’ve now read three times over. Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read.

I assume this to be true because whoever did it made no effort to format it to the page; Page one takes a line to print CANTO I immediately followed by the text, meaning the final line lusiadxs roughly every fourth stanza – the one that should end the page – instead landed on the top of the opposite page.
White’s verse translation even provides a clever alternative to literal prose translations and stubborn attempts to preserve Camoes’ Ottava Rima. Camoes captured the knowledge and the atmosphere of the world of his time and render them to us in a way that only the great poets can do. In other words, this book is not going to receive an Interfaith Award for Ecumenical Understanding anytime soon. Further to the story of Vasco de Gama, this is the story of Portugal as well. This long narrative poem of the 17th Century which recounts the epic voyages of Vasco da Gama is It is a truly a thing of wonder. Not just for references but for the oe. Purists may not appreciate this. But White himself acknowledges the difficulty of matching the splendor of these translations in the final sentence of luskadas introduction: Withoutabox Submit to Film Festivals.
The Catual sees a number of paintings that depict significant figures and events from Portuguese history, all of which are detailed by the author. Luis de Camoes is a proud Portuguese man, in awe of the might of his country which is at the height of its power. Camoens’ strong religious faith is also made clear as he alludes often to the clashes between Christian and Moslem.
The other English reviews on this page seem to be mistakenly referring to another edition, only the Portuguese one describes this book accurately. Amazon Second Chance Pass it on, trade it in, give it a second life.
Like the Portuguese reviewer, I also found misspellings or other sorts of misprints. Unfortunately, the lvro of work put into the project seems to have been minutes, not hours.
