One of my favourite writers is Russell T. Davies, the screenwriter and showrunner on Doctor Who for the first years of its reboot. Research and accuracy are important, for sure, but there comes a moment when science has to take a backseat to storytelling.

I respectfully take the opposing view. But I still like all the other real-world constraints on physics and behaviors. Without them to anchor me, I feel adrift in a sea of literary chaos. Do you have any strange rituals that you observe when you write?

Not so much rituals as really bad habits. I have to have my coffee several cups. I have to check Twitter. And I have to go see if that racket next door is the cats trashing the kitchen. Or the cats trashing the chickens… If you could have one superpower, what would it be? Well, you kind of have that superpower already, in your head.

These are the water-demons of Scottish myth that take the form of beautiful horses. There was that first 15 minutes, when we sat there, and nothing happened. And then the voices kind of showed up. I suppose, the natural outgrowth about writing about two friends, it becomes about their friendship, and the complexities of it, and the way personality plays off each other, and what they each like to do, separately and together.

It developed on its own; it was an organic process. Can a tall person and a short person can truly be friends?

But yes, tall people and short people can, and should be, friends. I, personally, like being short. I think it makes things easier. I sure would like to. One, we laugh a lot -- that was great.

To have someone in the room with me is an absolute delight and makes it seem less impossible. It became a kind of comforting, joyful process. So, absolutely, I would like to do another one. And I think Tony Fucile, who did the illustrations, is an absolute genius. I think we sent him pictures of ourselves, photos from like when we were seven years old. He captured exactly what we looked like.

We certainly have a lot of ideas, and we both love what Tony did with the book. If we could all pull it off, I think all three of us would like to do another.

My favorite food is deep-fried ravioli. I always get that every year. And I always go to the Agriculture Building, where they make apple cider popsicles for a dollar. Those are the two things I always have to get. If you could have one superpower, what would it be?

I would like to have four or five clones so I would have more time to do all the things I want to do, like fly to Mars.

And think of all the writing that clone could accomplish on the long commute to Mars! If you could have three authors alive or dead over for dinner, who would it be? Lastly, Emily Dickinson because she is one of my favorite poets. There was a dead poets society, so why not a dead authors dinner?

What is your favorite creature that exists only in literature? Gee, I did not see that coming. I usually like to track down tarantulas, komodo dragons, and boa constrictors. Actually, I love to read or go to an art museum. You just gave me a picture book idea: What would you like it to say on your tombstone? His day is done.
