YACOUB Associated Press IRBIL, Iraq Islamic extremists shot scores of Yazidi men to death in Iraq, lining them up in small groups and opening re with as sault ries before ab ducting their wives and children, according to an eyewitness, govern ment ofcials and peo ple who live in the area. A Yazidi lawmaker on Saturday cited the mass killing in Kocho as evi dence that his people are still at risk after a week of U. Meanwhile, war planes targeted insur gents around a large dam that was captured by the Islamic State ex tremist group earlier this month, nearby res idents said.
It was not clear whether the air strikes were carried out by Iraq or the United States. They ed the militants by scrambling up a bar ren mountain, where they got stranded.
Most were eventually able to escape with help from Kurdish ghters. Islamic State ght ers had surrounded the nearby village 12 days ago and demanded that its Yazidi residents con vert or die. On Friday af ternoon, they moved in. The militants told people to gather in a school, promising they would be allowed to leave Kocho after their details were record ed, said the eyewitness and the brother of the Kocho mayor, Nayef Jassem, who said he obtained his details from another witness.
The militants sep arated the men from the women and chil dren under 12 years old. They took men and male teens away in groups of a few dozen each and shot them on the edge of the village, according to a wound ed man who escaped by feigning death.
The ghters then walked among the bod ies, using pistols to n ish off anyone who ap peared to still be alive, the year-old man told The Associated Press by phone from an area where he was hid ing. He spoke on condi tion of anonymity, fear ing for his safety. They thought we were dead, and when they went away, we ran away.
We hid in a val ley until sundown, and then we ed to the mountains, he said. A Yazidi lawmaker, a Kurdish security ofcial and an Iraqi ofcial from the nearby city of Sinjar gave similar accounts, saying Islamic State ghters had massacred many Yazidi men Friday after seizing Kocho. All of them said they based their informa tion on the accounts of survivors.
Their ac counts matched those of two other Yazidi men, Qassim Hussein and Nayef Jassem, who said they spoke to oth er survivors. It was not clear pre cisely how many men were killed. Iraqi and Kurdish ofcials said at least 80 men were shot.
Yazidi residents said they believed the num ber was higher, because there were at least families in Kocho, and few were able to escape before the militants sur rounded their hamlet.
Kenya Airways and regional carrier Gambia Bird join a number of other airlines in tempo rarily cancelling ights to avoid transmitting the disease beyond the four countries already affected in West Africa. The decision was made with guidance from the countrys health ministry, Naikuni said. How did Fisher and his staff go about putting to gether a roster that lost eight NFL draft picks and can still be considered the most tal ented team in the nation? The answer is rather sim ple: Fisher is really good at getting really good play ers. He had long been con sidered one of the top re cruiters in the country even before he arrived in Talla hassee.
And his work since taking over the program in from legendary head coach Bobby Bowden has been, says the former coach, Diamonds in the rough often crystallize at Florida St.
After all, its not every day a former high school baseball coach gets to see one of his players pitch in a Major League game, let alone as a member of the New York Yankees. Thats exactly what Bultema got to do as Greene, who graduat ed from East Ridge High School inmade his seventh big league start and eighth appearance of the season against the Rays.
And Greene, the rst East Ridge player to reach the major leagues, had an other quality outing de spite getting a no decision. Greene lasted six innings, yielding two runs on sev en hits while striking out 10 with a walk and a hit batsman in the Yankees win.
Greene threw pitches, 68 for strikes. He left in the seventh inning with a lead before being relieved by Shawn Kelley. He became the 11th player in Yankees histo ry to reach double-digit strikeouts within his rst eight career games. Hes had a quality start almost every outing, Bultema said.
Its really cool to see what hes do ing. Bultema coached Greene during his junior and se nior years. At the time, Bultema wasnt thinking major leagues for the Cler mont native. To be honest with you, no, Bultema said when asked on whether or not he thought Greene had the potential to play in the big leagues someday. I would be lying to you if I said he would be playing in the major leagues seven years later. But its just a testa ment to his work ethic. Its not like one big leaguer af ter another is coming out of East Ridge.
Bultema was at the game with his wife and two boys and said he still keeps in contact with Greene through texts. When Bulte ma found out Greene was getting the start Saturday, Bultema was thrilled. Pitching in his home state again brought on some added emotions for Greene. Hes hard to say no to. When you break down the Florida State ros ter for the season, you see that 46 of the 81 recruited scholar ship players were either four-star or ve-star prospects, according to Rivals. Those wins on the recruiting trail were on full display last season as FSU won its rst 13 games by an average of 40 points en route to the programs third na tional title. But Fisher has long maintained he has nev er cared about star rankings. He recruits who he wants to recruit. If theyre rated high, great. If theyre not, oh well. And thats where perhaps his greatest strength comes into play: Fisher has shown an uncanny knack in his career of seeing a po tential superstar where others just see a threestar.
In they were both rstround picks in the NFL draft. Devonta Freeman, fa mously, was a zero-star recruit when Fisher of fered him a scholar ship before his senior year at Miami Central High. Theyre not go ing off a list. They dont follow the leader. And if you look at it, for a lot of the guys FSU was their rst big offer. And they do a good job of nding a kid thats maybe not as highly re garded, but has the at titude they want. And they bring those kids in and develop them.
And thats what they do. They develop both the top-tier guys and the guys that really need to develop. And Jimbos hit rate is absurdly high. The biggest thing in his evaluation is he doesnt miss a lot.

Edwards was considered to be the No. FSU has nine former ve-star prospects on its roster heading into the season. But it also has 35 play ers who were ranked three-star or lower.
Signing top prospects is important. But its also a matter of making the right evaluations on lesser-known players. Johnson won at MIS earlier this season his third victory in four races at the time but based on his recent form, a repeat isnt looking especially likely in Sundays Cup race.
Johnson nished in the top 10 two more times after winning at Michigan in June. Then his run of misfortune began. He was one of several top contend ers taken out by a cou ple huge accidents at Daytona, then tire is sues did him in at New Hampshire. BP said it received a tip in July that someone who worked at the Mobile office helped people submit fraudulent claims in exchange for some of the settlement money.
BP cited the employees alleged misconduct in its Aug. District Judge Carl Barbier rejected a similar request by BP in July, but he hasnt ruled yet on the companys renewed bid to suspend payments. In a court filing Sunday, two of the plaintiffs attorneys who brokered the settlement with BP said the company hasnt presented any evidence that any claim was improperly calculated or paid.
There is not even an argument, much less an evidentiary showing, to support the injunction of the entire settlement program, wrote the lawyers, Stephen Herman and James Roy. In his letter to a BP official, Welker said the Mobile employee accused of misconduct has helped people.
All of those claims were placed on hold. The employees mother filed a claim, but she denied any wrongdoing and withdrew it, Welker said. We have found no evidence to support the allegation of fraud pertaining to any of these claims, Welker wrote.
In fact, we have learned that the employee referred 32 of these claimants for fraud review by the settlement programleading to the detection of a significant multi-claimant scheme. John Michael Gancedo, 22, and Felicia Lynn Witfoth, 23, of Daphne Lane, Dunnellon, were charged with manufacturing meth with a child younger than 16 years old present in the residence and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Gancedo faces an extra charge of possession of a listed chemical hydrogen chloride, HCL used in the manufacture of a controlled substance. Deputies responded to complaints about drug activity at the residence and were immediately greeted with the strong odor of chemicals as they began their search of the residence.
The initial responding deputy then contacted the agency Tactical Impact Unit, which took over the investigation. According to the CCSO report, unit investigators were told by Gancedo and Witfoth where to find the ingredients used in the manufacture of meth, including lye, funnels, coffee filters and other chemicals. During his first interview with investigators, Gancedo reportedly said he was a helper during cook times for the meth and not the primary cook. However, when Witfoth was interviewed, she said Gancedo was the one who did the cooking in the far bathroom of the trailer they shared and that she would assist him by bringing chemicals and cold medicine to complete the process.
She also reportedly admitted that a young child had been present in the house when the cooking was going on. Witfoth told investigators she and Gancedo had been awake for more than 48 hours because of their use of the drugs. Contact Chronicle reporter A. Sidibe at or asidibe chronicleonline.

The settlement was announced early this month and will affect the companys base electricity rates beginning January The revisions to the settlement agreement relate to the Crystal River nuclear plant costs, the insurance settlement, the proposed Levy project, the future of Crystal River units 1 and 2 and longrange electricity needs in Florida.
Duke Energy also reaffirmed it is evaluating various sites including Citrus County, south of the Levy County site, for a new state-of-the-art, clean-burning natural gas-fired plant.
The company has ruled out converting older coal burning plants CR 1 and 2 to natural gas. Duke spokesperson Sterling Ivy said that is not an option. He explained, both units are nearly 40 years old and reaching the end of their operational license. In addition, there would be safety and security issues with the ongoing decommissioning of CR3, putting a natural gas line so close to the nuclear plant. Duke requested the PSC defer its determination on nuclear cost recovery for CR3 and Levy project issues to and approve the revised settlement, continuing the nuclear charge on customer bills.
