True, it is we mortals are of earthly, animal origin, our frame is indeed dust. Growing up in Pennsylvania and coming from a long line of hunters, the Second Amendment was a cherished given. There were always deer, rabbits and pheasants hanging from the line, which eventually made it made it to the dinner table. Shame on the NRA and their power-hungry lobbyist Marion Hammer for confusing the issue of the real intent of the Second Amendment rights.
Florida legislators had an opportunity to make a difference, but took the easy way out. Obviously, money, and Marion talks and cowards walk away from the tough issues. Fewer, we suspect, can list the fourth: Bus loads of Florida high school students went to Tallahassee to call for legislative action, and thousands of teenagers throughout the nation have held demonstrations in their own states.
In our area, we are aware of several instances in which students and school administrators worked together to allow young people to express their opinions during brief demonstrations.
We commend those students who have demonstrated this maturity and respect for the leadership of their schools, and those administrators who have given at least tacit consent. But we also offer this observation: Some of you will choose to do so, and those of you fortunate enough to be elected should remember these experiences of your youth. If you need a reminder of what American government is all about, reread the First Amendment.
Are you really making that leap from the history you reference? And are we really supposed to take that argument seriously? The life you save may be mine. I never meant for my decision to resign to be a public political statement. Sadly, it became one. The details of how that happened are less important than the demoralizing take-away: Leaking is not new in Washington.
This was a painful indication that the current administration has little respect for those who have served the nation apolitically for decades. I could no longer represent him personally and remain faithful to my beliefs about what makes America truly great. America is undoubtedly less welcome in the world today, as the president pursues a unilateral and isolationist path.
These policies are purportedly being pursued to make good on nativist campaign rhetoric that resonated with many legitimately aggrieved Americans. But I know many of these voters. They deserve enlightened and informed debate about the true nature of the globalized economy, automation, and the need for education and re-imagined job-skills programs to keep us competitive.
A part of my resignation letter that has not been quoted publicly reads: Demonizing migrants may placate the few genuine racists in America, such as those who carried torches in Charlottesville.
But immigration is never a binary proposition. Moreover, policy options based on fear and hashtags will only offer us a false dichotomy. So, what does a private citizen do in the face of such wrenching polarization?
We need to understand each other better. As someone who is fully and proudly American, and yet by life experience fully bilingual and bi-cultural, I will now do my best to help. Where the president seeks to build a wall, I seek to build a bridge. I now return to the United States of e pluribus unum. Feeley, who retired this week as a U.
Yet, somehow, I keep laying myself open to all the negatives listed above. My casual observation, when I venture in to do research, is this: It requires a special event to attract the crowds. It really bothers me to see the businesses which have private parking for their own clients and customers having to tape off their parking just to be able to operate.
I understand that a plan has been in place for years to include so me of South McCall Road by providing a mixed-use zoning for living space upstairs and shops downstairs.
Highlands news-sun ( 03-14-2018 )
I love that idea. It is a throw back to our olden days where shopkeepers lived above their businesses. Why are there empty buildings or spaces?
What do current businesses on Dearborn Street think about the idea? How are the businesses that are on Old Englewood Road included in special events and Dearborn Street activities? Do the get a boost in business? I wonder, how many special events Venice and Punta Gorda need to keep their downtowns vital? And many of their special events are held off main street: And, of course, we have the Charlotte County Fairgrounds.
That makes sense to me. If there are going to be large crowds, a site with adequate off-road parking is safer and easier to attend. Perhaps it is time for the CRA to use some of its money to purchase land out of downtown, say on River Road where Pine Street Park might also be utilized for parking, and move the biggest events to a more conducive venue.
Revitalizing main street, or, in our case, Dearborn Street, was and still is a laudable goal. And I realize it was not in the beginning, nor is it now, without bumps and hiccups. I simply feel that now is the right time to assess what is working and change what is not before we expand the area even further.
It will prevent many problems and lead to a more successful outcome. Cris White of Englewood is a community activist and former business owner whose guest columns appear regularly in the Sun. Those 14 students and three educators who died in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas massacre have been laid to rest and will forever be mourned by their loved ones and many more who never knew them.
Those who survived bear emotional scars. But in between those who died and those who lived and could walk, or run, from the scene, are those who still are recovering from the vicious wounds of an AR There was this sudden reminder when, on Thursday, one of those 16 students, Anthony Borges, 15, took a turn for the worse and was moved back into intensive care at Broward Health. Borges has been described as a hero of the Parkland shooting. He has undergone multiple surgeries and is now dealing with a possible abdominal infection.
Doctors operated twice in the past few days, cutting a section of the small intestine to stop the infection, his father wrote on Facebook. Borges is not alone in that injured group of 16 students and one English teacher who had angels on their shoulders the day Cruz came out shooting.
One survivor has spoken out. Fuentes, a senior, carries the visible scars of that horrible day.

She has a black eye from diving for cover, she also has shrapnel lodged behind her left eye and cheek. Fuentes has told reporters her high school experience is over and so is her sense of life as usual: The Broward school district must monitor these students, even if their relationship becomes adversarial.

Rick Scott signed legislation that provides record funding for Bright Futures college scholarships and continues expanding voucher-like programs for children to attend private schools. In a vote, the House approved the budget HBwhich takes effect on July 1.
The Senate then approved the budget in a vote, with opposition in both chambers coming from Democrats. Republican leaders touted increases money for the education system. Scott signed a highereducation bill SB 4 that will permanently expand Bright Futures merit-based scholarships for university and state college students.
Scott also signed a far-ranging education bill HBsupported by Corcoran, that will expand the use of voucher-like scholarships to send more public-school students to private schools. While Republican leaders touted that bill, it drew opposition from Democrats. One program in the bill will let students who face bullying or harassment in public schools transfer to private schools.
The legislation also allows businesses that pay a state tax on commercial leases to voluntarily shift those funds to Gardiner scholarships, which pay for services and private-school scholarships for disabled students. Rick Scott may have to resign early if he goes ahead with an anticipated run for the U. They were used up in 18 months. More such green cards are needed now, before hospital understaffing contributes to more preventable illness and death. The package was a reasoned response to the Parkland tragedy that claimed 17 lives.
It did represent a compromise. The Legislature has come alarmingly close to passing open carry and college campus carry legislation. This bill shifted the emphasis in a sensible direction. The law raises the minimum age a person can buy a gun from 18 to It requires a three-day waiting period for all gun purchases.
It increases funding for mental health services and expands school-based mental health care. It would prevent come from buying guns. It allows a court to issue risk-protection orders for up to 12 months for those considered a risk to themselves or others. Classroom teachers would not be included in the program. That followed a close vote in the Senate.
Both votes were relatively bipartisan, and welcomed. Cary Pigman, R-Sebring, voted for it. Denise Grimsley did not. Pigman has not replied to requests for comment. Grimsley, to her credit, did.
That is a question yet to be answered. But we do believe that, taken together, these measures will extend more protection to the children who attend our schools. He went on to add that he hoped the same kindness might be shown to him in a similar circumstance.
