He served as an assistant coach and jumps coordinator and helped lead the team to four straight Texas Class 4A State Championships. Prior to his time in Lancaster, Johnson spent one year at North Panola High School in Mississippi as the head coach to lay the foundation for a new track and field program at the school. Johnson also spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Nacogdoches High School in Texas where he worked specifically with the sprinters and jumpers.

Along with extensive high school coaching experience, Johnson has collegiate coaching experience working as a graduate assistant and then a full-time assistant coach for his alma mater Alcorn State. After earning his degree from Alcorn State in recreation studies, Johnson then served as a graduate assistant while earning his masters in health and physical education.
During his time at Alcorn State as a coach, Johnson was charged with overseeing the jumpers and supervising the freshman athletes.
He helped coach athletes to eight Southwestern Athletic Conference titles. As an athlete for Alcorn State, Johnson had much success as well.
During the season, Watson coached the first K-State National Champion in the discus, Shadae Lawrence, who won the event with a throw of On her way to the National Championship, Lawrence set a school record, meet record, and facility record with her Big 12 Championship throw of Lawrence completed the season undefeated, en route to her National Championship effort.
But Lawrence's success wasn't the the only successor of Watson's coaching. During the season, Watson saw immense success from his athletes, highlighted by Dani Winters winning the indoor shot put national title with a school record throw of Watson also coached Brady Grunder and Shadae Lawrence to their first career Big 12 titles in the weight throw and discus, respectively, while Winters won her second-straight outdoor conference title.
Three athletes also set school records in under Watson as Winters set the indoor shot put record, Lawrence set the discus record and Tyler Merkley set the hammer throw record. Three Wildcats earned All-American honors in Eugene, Oregon, while seven throwers recorded scoring performances at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships, including top-three efforts from Savatovic, Winters and Ryan Hershberger. A First Team All-American in the hammer, Savatovic became only the fifth thrower, and first sincein school history to earn first team honors in the event.
Titzman would go onto to finish ninth at the championship meet to earn All-American honors. In three years at UNLV, Watson had athletes break three school records and record 12 top-five all-time marks.
